ACADEMIC PROGRAMMING
Assessments are an integral part of academic success. At Winona Elementary and Winona Secondary, several types of assessments are used throughout the school year to monitor students’ progress toward achievement mastery of standards.
STAR Reading tests are used to determine growth and what level of book a child can read independently with success in the Accelerated Reader program. Kindergarten through first grade students take the STAR Reading test 5 times a year. These students do not take the benchmark assessments which are given in all other grades at the end of each nine weeks. Students in grades 2-6 take the STAR Reading test 3 times per year. If teachers need to STAR Test more that what is required, they can in order to determine if a child's reading range needs to be adjusted.
i-Ready Diagnostic tests are used to place children on Independent Learning Paths (ILP). An ILP gives each child his/her own specialized plan tailored to individual learning needs enabling students in the same classroom to work on a variety of levels. The test is given 3 times a year in grades Kindergarten through sixth.
ELS Benchmarks are given at the end of the 9 weeks to measure success on grade level standards. These tests may be on what has been taught in the nine weeks or on all standards for the entire year.Parents can think of these as 9 weeks tests.
TUTORING - There are plenty of slots for tutoring open in grades 7-12. If your child is failing or struggling with any subject, please call the school office and leave a message for After-School Administrator Philip Harville.
OPERATIONS
Athletics are continuing with masks required at indoor events. Masks are not required at outdoor athletic events.
Transportation is running smoothly in the new year. WMCSD is working on purchasing a new bus for students with special needs.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
A student who tests positive for COVID-19 or who is exposed to someone infected with COVID-19 must notify his/her school nurse immediately.

The school nurse at each location makes all decisions regarding beginning and ending dates of exclusions from the school environment. The school nurses will use the protocol below to make determinations on an individual basis. To appeal any decision, the parent of the student must follow the guidance given and may contact the school principal.

If you test positive for COVID-19
Everyone, regardless of vaccination status.
Stay home for 10 days.
If you were exposed to someone with COVID-19
If you:
Have been boosted
OR Completed the primary series of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine within the last 6 months OR Completed the primary series of J&J vaccine within the last 2 months:
Wear a well-fitted mask around others for 10 days.
If you develop symptoms, stay home for 10 days from the onset of symptoms as determined by the school nurse. This is with or without a test.
If you test positive, stay home for 10 days from the date of the test.
If you:
Completed the primary series of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine over 6 months ago and are not boosted
OR Completed the primary services of J&J over 2 months ago and are not boosted
OR Are unvaccinated:
Stay home for 10 days from the date of exposure.
If you develop symptoms, stay home for 10 days from the onset of symptoms as determined by the school nurse. This is with or without a test.
If you test positive, stay home for 10 days from the date of the test.
