Tiger with mouth open

It’s a Great Day to be a Tiger!

Students and staff will observe Spring Holidays March 14 - 18 and return to school on Monday, March 21st.  After Spring Holidays, we will be in our last 9 weeks period of the school year.  This term is filled with activities, awards programs, and state assessments.  Parents can support students by reviewing ActiveParent, asking students about their day, and communicating with teachers and school staff regarding student needs.

OPERATIONS

The roofing project at Knox Gym is scheduled to begin this week. This project was expected to be delayed until January 2023; however, we received word this week that all materials were available and work would begin.

At Winona Elementary, the demolition of the first grade restrooms has been completed.  We discovered that demo was much louder than anticipated so that work has been moved to after school hours and the weekends.  Renovations should begin this week which include all new flooring, plumbing, sinks, toilets, stalls, fixtures, lighting, etc.  This is exciting news!

COMMUNICATIONS

ActiveParent is a great tool for parents to monitor student progress in the areas of academics, attendance, and discipline.  Please contact your child’s school to sign up if you haven’t already done so.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

COVID data looks great with no employees being quarantined or testing positive in the last 5 weeks.  There have been 20 students quarantined or positive in that same amount of time.  We are so thankful for this decrease.

We are pleased that there have not been any traffic issues at Winona Elementary since we made the decision to not allow our school resource officers to direct traffic on Highway 51.  This decision was affirmed by the Mississippi Department of Education Office of Safe and Orderly School’s Director Brian McGarity in his response to the issue of jurisdiction.  He stated that

MS Code 37-7-353 spells out jurisdiction and that the law enforcement entity responsible for working a traffic accident in the area would also be responsible for traffic control.

WMCSD has reached out to the Mississippi Department of Transportation for an evaluation of the roadways surrounding our school campuses.  We asked that MDOT provide us with recommendations for anything that we need to do to improve provide safe routes to school for our students whether they ride a bus or in a car or walk to school.

TECHNOLOGY

In school walkthroughs, it is noted that students are using their Chromebooks in many classes.  Students report that they do like using the Chromebooks as a part of their academic work.
