Veronica Helms began her educational career in the Winona School District in 1997 as a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Winona Junior High School. Coach Helms spent twenty-one years teaching and coaching within the district as a social studies, computer science, marketing & business teacher at both Winona High School and Winona Career & Technical Center as well as basketball, track, & cheer coach, before accepting her first assistant principal position in the Winona-Montgomery District. After three years as assistant principal, Coach Helms moved into the role of WCTC Director and district Athletic Director where she still currently serves. This year will mark Coach Helms twenty-eighth year as a member of the Winona / Winona-Montgomery District.
Her educational and coaching experiences have afforded her the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of people to meet the common goal of increasing student achievement and well-being. Her educational philosophy is based on his uncompromising belief that all students can learn, given a positive learning environment, strong and knowledgeable leadership, a committed and focused educational team, an encouraging community, and a supportive family. All of which, the Winona - Montgomery District possess.
Coach Helms received a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Mississippi State University in 1997. She returned to Mississippi State where she earned her Master’s Degree in Physical Education in 1998. After several years of teaching and coaching, she pursued her administrative certification & Specialist’s Degree from Mississippi State University, which she obtained in 2009.
On a personal note, Coach Helms is a lifelong resident of Montgomery County. She was a 1992 graduate of Montgomery County High School. She currently resides in Winona with her husband Steven, who is also an educator, and her two wonderful children MyCala and Connor. MyCala is completing her master’s in Education at Delta State University, and Connor is entering his freshman year at Holmes Community College.
Coach Helms has a great appreciation for the school district and the partnerships between school and family that have made her children successful.
