Tiger with mouth open

It’s a Great Day to be a Tiger!

This is the best time of year.  The kids have all settled back into the routines of school and there are so many fun activities and events going on for everyone to look forward to and participate in over the next several weeks. This week brings the Science Fair for students in fifth and sixth grades, football on Thursday, and Halloween!

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMING Great things are happening in our academic programs too.  Winona Elementary is providing tutoring and interventions during the school day and after school. The interventions are planned according to the needs that are identified by progress monitoring assessments. All students in first through sixth grades have one hour each day called Power Hour. The focus of this time is to provide remediation to students who have identified learning gaps and enrich students who are ready to go further in depth with grade level standards. The goal of tutoring and intervention time is to enable all students to be successful in their respective grade levels.

Parents of students in grades 7-12, we need your help in getting students to attend after school programs for tutoring in a variety of subjects.  If your child is struggling or failing classes, please contact Mr. Philip Harville at (662) 283-1244 to discuss what programs are available to help your child be successful.

OPERATIONS WMCSD has taken advantage of a great service in Govdeals.net.  This is a web site that allows the school district to auction off old or unused property to the public.  WMCSD uses this site to clear property that has been removed from the district property roles.  All property is advertised by the district and then purchased through an anonymous auction.

Congratulations to the Winona Tigers Football team and coaches as they have secured the District Championship with the win against Amanda Elzy on October 22.  They will play their final district game at Ruleville on Thursday evening, October 28.  The Tigers will host the 1st Round of MHSAA Playoffs on November 5, against an opponent that has yet to be decided.

The Tigers Basketball teams, both high school and junior high, have begun their seasons.  The high school teams will host a pair of events on November 2 & November 4 against Coffeeville and Oxford, respectively.

COMMUNICATIONS Check out the Winona Career and Technical Center page on the WMCSD website at winonamontgomerycsd.com/page/winona-career-and-technical-center.  You will find information on WCTC courses, CTE counseling services, certifications, and important links like: Get2College, Holmes Community College, Federal Student Aid, and Mississippi Student Financial Aid.

HEALTH AND SAFETY   There were no employees or students quarantined or excluded from the school setting last week. We are hopeful that this trend will continue. Attendance at Winona Elementary school has improved greatly due to the decreased number of quarantines; however, student tardiness continues to be an issue.  It is very important that students get to school on time.  A child who is tardy starts off the day behind their classmates and their teachers have to spend time getting them caught up.  Our teachers start teaching as soon as the bell rings to signal that the day has begun.  Kids who are late are missing out on that beginning of the day/class instruction that is so important for setting the stage for that day’s learning.

Some ideas for helping students get to school on time are preparing the night before by taking a bath or shower, picking out clothes and preparing food/snacks.  Other ideas include teaching your child how to set an alarm and get up the first time the alarm sounds and establishing daily routines so your child knows what to expect each day.

TECHNOLOGY Parents and grandparents know that they have to stay involved with their children’s use of technology.  Although the internet opens up a world of educational information for students, it is vitally important that we protect our students from potential dangers.  For ideas on how to keep kids safe on the internet, visit the following websites:
